I Am Kurious Orange (2009)
Hybrid project created for David Cunningham Projects, San Francisco
I conceived I Am Kurious Orange specifically for DCP creating a part exhibition, part rehearsal, part residency and part performance space. Inspired by the long-term creative association between dancer Michael Clark and U.K. band The Fall, the project took its initial cues from the Clark/Fall collaboration on the ballet I am Curious, Orange and the accompanying soundtrack I am Kurious Oranj.
The rehearsal and residency space was activated three days a week by lead artists Alex Hetherington, Karla Milosevich and co. and Mark Arthur. Each of the lead artists responded to the Michael Clark /Fall elements in the space. Over the course of the show drawings, costumes, props, stage directions and music evolved to make up the different scenarios.
The homage to the Fall space was an exhibition within an exhibition which included Fall and Michel Clark ephemera.
I Am Kurious Orange culminated in a one night production in three acts building on the rehearsals and material developed.
“What distinguishes Anne Colvin’s curatorial project I Am Kurious Orange seen recently at David Cunningham Projects in San Francisco is its desire to rely on contingency, anticipation and occupancy above conclusiveness and completion. This Scottish artist and curator who has been based in San Francisco for some time and is earning a considerable reputation on both sides of the Atlantic has devised an exhibition and performance scenario whereby both artists and audiences are challenged by the simultaneous appearance of a residency, a series of performance rehearsals and an ongoing mutation of objects, materials, texts, props, music and video” – -Orlando Santos, Interface.
